U sjećanje na klotjevačke žrtve genocida

This time 2 years ago we were here in Klotjevac: Hariz and I, and 22 students from Australia. For the students and for me it was a life-changing and a life-affirming experience. It was a deeply emotional experience. An experience that transcended language and cultural differences. As visitors, we were welcomed into and made to feel part of the community, part of the zavičaj.

Tačno prije dvije godine bili smo ovdje u Klotjevcu: Hariz i ja, i  22 studenta iz Australije. Za studente i za mene to je bilo iskustvo koje je promijenilo i unaprijedilo naš pogled na svijet. To je bilo jedno duboko emocinalno iskustvo. Iskustvo koje prevailazi razlike u jeziku i kulturi. Kao gosti, bili smo dobrodošli i postali smo dijelom ovog zavičaja.

The night before we left Klotjevac to return home to Australia, the whole community came together to thank us for our visit and to say farewell. We shared spit-roast lamb, slivovitz, and lots of speeches. I think we all had the sense that our visit represented a significant moment, symbolising the reconnection of Klotjevac with the world beyond BiH.

Noć prije nego što smo napustili Klotjevac i krenuli nazad za Australiju, cijelo selo se okupilo da nam se zahvali na posjeti i poželi nam sretan put. Družili smo se uz janjeće pečenje, domaću šljivovicu i puno razgovora. Svi smo postali svjesni da je naša posjeta bila važan trenutak, simbolički povezujući Klotjevac sa svijetom izvan BiH.

At the time I remember thinking how the past cannot be recreated. How what has happened cannot be undone, or simply be wished away. How, victims cannot be brought back to life.

Sjećam se kako sam tada mislio da se prošlost ne može vratiti. Kako ono što se deslio ne može biti popravljeno ili jednostavno odneseno vodom. Kako se žrtve ne mogu vratiti medju žive.

But I also remember thinking that the past can be reclaimed. That, despite all that has happened, the perpetrators of ethnic cleansings can be denied their final victory. What was demonstrated that night and during the whole of our stay in Klotjevac was that survivors can honour victims by continuing to live and to act according to the values and traditions by which the victims had lived their lives.

Ali isto tako se sjećam kako sam razmišljao da se prošlost ne može oteti. Da, bez obzira šta se desilo, počiniteljima „etničkog čišćenja“ se može uskratiti konačna pobjeda. Ono što mi je postalo jasno te noći — a i za vrijeme cijeloga boravka u Klotjevcu— jeste činjenica da preživjeli Klotivljani nastavljaju odavati poštovanje žrtvama kroz način života i ponašanje bazirano na vrijednostima i tradiciji po kojima su i  žrtve Klotjevca živjele svoje živote.

Those values and traditions include welcoming in strangers, protecting them, giving them hospitality, sharing locally produced food and drink in short, being embraced within the zavičaj. The welcome, the protection, the hospitality, the forging of enduring friendships, were a demonstration a proof that the criminals had not succeeded in destroying what it means to be ‘Bosnian’. What it means to be Klotivljani. One of the students, Anna, recorded the moment in her diary:

Ove vrijednosti i tradicije uključuju i gostoljubivost prema strancima i gostima i dijeljenje onoga što se ima, hrane i pica—ukratko, njihovo  prihvatanje u zavičaj. Gostoljubivost, zaštita, dobronamjernost i stvaranje dugoročnih prijateljstava su se pokazali kao najbolji dokaz šta znači biti “Bosanac”. Šta znači biti Klotivljanin. Jedna od naših studentica je zapisala u svom dnevniku sljedeće:

July 20 2007: Ron is speaking in English, with Hariz translating his words into Bosnian. The Drina valley is spectacular before us. The sun is setting, creating a glowing fringe of pink behind the silhouettes of the mountains. A sliver of the moon sits high in the sky. We are seated on the ground, all together. Bosnian words are tossed back and forth. The community unanimously agrees on a memorial near the water fountain. They want it made of stone in the shape of  Bosnia and inscribed with the names of the victims of the aggression. We have made our commitment.

20. juli 2007.g.: Ron priča na engleskom, a Hariz prevodi na bosanski. Ispred nas se pružila spektakularna dolina Drine. Sunce je na zalasku, formirajući ružičaste sjenke povrh planina. Srebrni mjesec je vidljiv visoko na nebu. Mi sjedimo na ledini, svi zajedno. Bosanske riječi se razmijenjuju ukrug. Cijelo selo je za izgradnju spomenika na vodi. Željeli bi da taj spomenik bude u formi Bosne s uklesnim imenima žrtava agresije. Mi smo odlučni da ih u tome podržimo.

The commitment to which Anna refers was to work with the ‘Friends of Klotjevac’ back in Australia to raise money for a monument to those Klotivljani who had perished during the genocide. This action also inspired survivors from Klotjevac dispersed across the globe to join the project and provide their moral and financial support.

Podrška o kojoj Anna piše se odnosi na aktivnosti udruženja Prijatelji Klotjevca u Australiji koje je skupilo dio novca za izgradnju spomenika Klotivljanima koji su nestali u genocide. Njihova akcija je inspirirala Klotivljane diljem svijeta da se pridruže i daju  svoju moralnu i finansijsku podršku izgradnji ovog spomenika.

It’s that monument that we are dedicating today to the more than 100 Klotivljani who were killed during the genocide.

Ovaj spomenik koji danas otkrivamo, posvećujemo svim Klotivljana, njih preko stotinu, koji su ubijeni u genocidu od ‘92-‘95.

We’re doing it here in the heart of what was once a thriving village. Here, where life-giving water from the earth flows eternally.

To činimo ovdje, u srcu ovog nekada prosperitetnog sela. Ovdje, gdje izvire iz zemlje i teče vjećno voda koja život znači.

When we look around us we may see only a few rebuilt buildings; we may count only a handful of permanent returnees.

Kada pogledamo oko sebe možemo vidjeti nekoliko ponovo izgradjenih kuća, na prste možemo prebrojati stalne povratnike.

But this is more than a monument to what has been lost. It is a monument to what lives on. A monument to the determination of Klotivljani not to give up their values, their identity, and their connection to place, even when their physical home today may be on the other side of the globe.

Medjutim, ovo je puno više nego spomenik onome što je izgubljeno. Ovo je  spomenik i onome što još živi. Spomenik odlučnosti Klotivljana da ne predaju svoje vrijednosti, svoj identitet i svoju vezu s ovim mjestom, čak i  onda kada su njihovi fizički domovi na drugoj strani svijeta.

Today is a reunion of the survivors¾and their friends and supporters. We have people here from the US, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, the Czech Republic as well as from many different towns across Bosnia.

Danas je ovo ponovno skupljanje preživjelih Klotivljana i njihovih prijatelja. Imamo ovdje ljude koji su stigli iz Amerike, Australije, Švedske, Austrije, Švicarske, Njemačke, Holandije, Češke, kao i iy mnogih gradova diljem Bosne.

But it is more than a return of the survivors. It is also a symbolic return to their village of the 108 Klotivljani who perished between 1992 and 1995.

Medjutim, ovo je više nego povratak preživjelih. Ovo je takodjer simbolični povratak 108 Klotivljana koji su izgubili svoje živote izmedju1992. i 1995.

The names that are inscribed on this solid piece of granite in the shape of Bosnia-Herzegovina represent their symbolic return to their rightful place. Previously shells rained down on Klotjevac from Tara and Zvijezda. But anyone looking down today from the mountains opposite will see that the people whose names are inscribed here continue to belong to this place¾even in death.

Imena isklesana u ovom granitu u formi BiH predstavljaju njihov simbolični povratak mjestu kojem po svemu pripadaju. Nekada su granate kao kiša padale na Klotjevac s Tare i Zvijezde. Ali svako ko danas pogleda s tih planina na drugu stranu vidjet će da ljudi čija su imena ispisana ovdje nastavljaju pripadati svom mjestu—čak i u svojoj smrti.

By its very presence, this monument represents a challenge to Serbia and RS. It also challenges the rest of the world to take a stand. It challenges us not to forget. Not to ignore the genocide. Not to go soft on the perpetrators of evil. Not to ignore the illegitimacy of RS. It forces all of us even in faraway Australia¾to confront and to resist the evil that was done, and in so many ways continues to be done.

Samim svojim prisustvom, ovaj spomenik predstavlja izazov Srbiji i RS-u. Takodjer predstavlja izavov ostatku svijeta da se izjasni i zauzme svoj stav. Izazov za sve nas da ne zaboravimo. Da ne ignoriramo genocid. Da ne budemo blagi prema počiniteljima zla. Da ne ignoriramo nelegalnost RS-a. Ovaj spomenik to zahtjeva od svih nas, pa čak i od nas u dalekoj Australiji, da se suprostavimo zlu koje je ovdje počinjeno, i koje se se na razne načine nastavlja činiti.

Much blood has been shed in this place. If it should flow for 1,000 years, all the water coming down the Drina could not wash the blood away. It is indelibly stained in the memory of the survivors. It reaches the far corners of the globe, wherever you find Klotivljani and their supporters and friends.

Mnogo je krvi ovdje proljeveno. I kad bi tekla hiljadu godina Drina ne bi mogla sprati svu tu krv. Tom krvlju će biti zauvijek natopljena sjećanja preživjelih, dosežući do najdaljih ćoškova svijeta, gdje god ima Klotivljana i  njihovih prijatelja.

The grief, the torment and the anguish will never go away. But this monument, made of enduring stone and fashioned in the shape of  Bosnia-Herzegovina, symbolises that the criminals who tried to obliterate Bosnia did not succeed.

Tuga, bol i patnja neće nikada prestati. Ali ovaj spomenik, napravljen od tvrdog kamena isklesanog u obliku BiH, simbolizira da zločinci koji su pokušali uništiti BiH nisu u tome uspjeli.

Klotjevac is testimony to that.

Klotjevac je dokaz tome.
