Phase II Preliminary Written Assignment
Neuffer/Bosnia
Due: March 17, 2010

In this first assignment you are to reflect on the historical dimensions of the genocide in Bosnia. You are to use chapter one of Elizabeth Neuffer’s book as the sole resource for the paper.  Provide direct quotes, extracting passages from the text with page numbers for reference. Discuss the historical events that Slobodan Milosevic was able to use to manipulate public opinion, in his speech at Kosovo Polje, as well as elsewhere, so to divide the ethnic groups and rise to power, seeking a “greater Serbia”(EN 20). Include detail, for example, about the Ottoman empire (e.g. the battle of Kosovo Polje in 1389) and the Croatian/Nazi Ustasha (including the Jasenovac concentration camp). Consider other details that you find compelling. Remember that you will need to revise, synthesize and incorporate this work into the culminating written assignment. Not all the information you include in this preliminary assignment will be able to be transferred into the culminating assignment.

Your paper must be 2-3 pages in length, typed (12 pt font) and double-spaced, with conventional margins.
